After breakfast in one of Taupo’s multitude of cafes (Replete Cafe & Store), we set off for the drive to Napier via Huka Falls. The falls aren’t that great but worth seeing for the sheer amount of water that flows through the valley, and there are loads of activities you can do in the area.
The drive to Napier was long and scenic with not a lot of places to stop – and definitely nowhere to get fuel or anything – but fortunately we didn’t need any!
Napier as a town is very pretty and best known for the art deco buildings that followed an earthquake in the 1930’s. After checking into the Napier Quality Inn and sorting out the WiFi (they changed the password and didn’t tell anyone!) we walked around town and admired the buildings. Although it is a very nice looking town, the centre of town didn’t appear that lively and the Ahuriri area may have been a better call for somewhere to stay. We ended up having a drink at Monica Loves, which was very nice, and something to eat at The Rose Irish Pub, which was just ok.
